If you enjoy taking part in legal administrative and clerical support under unique and complex circumstances and can type at a speed of 45 words per minute, the Senior Legal Typist (SLT) position with the Division of Workers' Compensation (DWC) may be for you.

DWC within the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) monitors the administration of workers' compensation claims and provides services to assist in resolving disputes with claims for workers' compensation benefits. DWC is looking for an effective communicator willing to prepare correspondence independently. The SLT will review and process legal documents such as case openings, pleadings, and other correspondence. The SLT will also assist parties and litigants with inquiries and updates in person, by telephone, or email. Additionally, the SLT will transcribe dictation from a dictating machine for reports, decisions, or orders. This position has flexibility to telework and is expected to report to the office 3 days a week.

Effective July 1, 2025, the following bargaining units and associated excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month:

Bargaining unit 1,3, 4,9,11, 14,15, 17, 20,& 21 and associated Excluded

Effective July 1, 2025, the above Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a 3% salary reduction in exchange for 5 hours of the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month through 6/30/27. 

Bargaining unit 2, 16, and associated Excluded

Effective July 1, 2025, the above Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a 4.62% salary reduction in exchange for 8 hours of the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month through 10/31/26.

Bargaining unit 7 and associated Excluded

Effective July 1, 2025, bargaining unit 7 and associated excluded State employees are subject to a 2% salary reduction in exchange for 3.5 hours of the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month through 6/30/27.

Working Conditions

This position is located at:

Our office and court is conveniently located within one to two blocks of Starbucks and most national restaurant chains. We are directly across the street from the Northridge Mall's food court and a retail shopping center. We have close and easy access to the highway 101 and we are 25 minutes from the ocean/coast Monterey Bay. Telework available two (2) days per week. The SLT works in a smoke-free DWC Office with controlled temperature and quiet to moderate noise levels.

Special Requirements

Proficient with Microsoft Office products including, Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point. Typing Certificate of 45 words per minute, ability to read and write English at a level required for successful job performance, establish and maintain effective working relationships, communicate effectively, follow directions, analyze situations and take effective action using good judgment in decision making, manage time and resources effectively and be responsive to management needs.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Knowledge of spelling, grammar, punctuation, business English usage and correspondence.
  • Knowledge of technical legal terms and various legal forms and documents and their processing.
  • Knowledge of modern office methods, supplies, and equipment.
  • Excellent interpreting skills to accurately interpret written material and numerical data.
  • Excellent writing skills to edit written material.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, to ensure quality customer service and to communicate with other staff and those contacted in the work place.
  • Excellent organizational skills to prioritize work assignments or projects.
  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Word and Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to type at a speed of 45 words per minute.
  • Ability to read and write English at a level required for successful job performance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to prepare correspondence independently.
  • Ability to perform difficult legal clerical work including the ability to process a large variety of legal documents, spell correctly, use good English, and make arithmetic computations.
  • Ability to transcribe accurately difficult dictation involving a variety of legal terms from a dictating machine. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow directions
  • Ability to analyze situations accurately and take effective action.
