Rutherford County Government is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Medicolegal Death Investigator to assist with the investigation of deaths reportable to the Office of the Medical Examiner under Tennessee Code Annotated ?38-7-108 and other applicable laws. This role is critical in determining the cause and manner of death, identifying decedents, and preserving evidence.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct thorough medicolegal investigations of reportable deaths
Serve as a liaison between RCEMS, the Medical Examiner, law enforcement, county officials, investigative agencies, and decedents' families
Prepare detailed reports in state and county case management systems
Support identification processes and assist with evidence handling and preservation
Communicate findings clearly, both in writing and verbally
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, Behavioral Science, or related field
One of the following credentials preferred:
Licensed AEMT or Paramedic (EMT-P)
Registered Nurse (RN) or Physician's Assistant (PA)
Certification from the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI)
If licensed outside Tennessee, must meet TN EMS reciprocity requirements within one year of hire
If not ABMDI registered, must obtain Registry-level certification within one year of hire
Strong computer and report-writing skills
Valid Tennessee driver's license
Must pass a criminal history background check

Previous experience as a County Medical Examiner Investigator
