Job Description

Position Overview

The school Social Worker serves as a critical member of the school community. The Social Worker delivers and monitors high-quality, data-driven interventions to support students in meeting and surpassing their individualized goals. The role will include providing core services to students and staff in prevention, consultation, intervention, and assessment. The Social Worker will work as part of the counseling team, school psychologists, speech and language therapists, general education scholars, and staff. The ideal candidate will have school experience and outside-of-school clinical experience.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties 

  • Consult with students, faculty, and families on an as-needed basis regarding student social and emotional issues.
  • Engage with outside providers related to specific student needs and issues.
  • Make referrals when necessary to outside providers.
  • Provide crisis intervention and behavior management to expedite students’ return to classrooms for learning and to build students’ ability to meet all social, emotional, and academic expectations.
  • Develop and implement curriculum for social and emotional development/intervention with students.
  • Administer records, documentation, and other compliance activities.
  • Serve as a resource for students, faculty, and families related to social and emotional issues.
  • Collaborate with other counseling team members and be a resource to one another.
  • Communicate all necessary information to appropriate members of the school community.
  • Participate in school-wide or division-based committees and ad hoc committees where necessary.
  • Participate in team meetings about students and student needs.
  • Attend weekly division meetings and full faculty meetings.

Communication:

  • Communicate with all members of our community in a polite, thoughtful, and honest manner.
  • Act with integrity and address all conflicts in a professional manner.
  • Communicate with parents and guardians to discuss students' needs and progress. This may be done through e-mail, written notes, phone calls, or face-to-face meetings.
  • Communicate with outside therapists, tutors, and other professionals working with our students.
  • Complete and submit recommendations, evaluations, and other requests for information about students.
  • Work to ensure clear communication with families, psychologists, therapists, and other outside providers. Seek support when necessary.
  • Plan for and participate in parent-teacher conferences.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time exempt position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a half-hour paid lunch; faculty meetings occur every Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand and will be scheduled in advance.

Travel

On occasion, travel between campuses is necessary for meetings, which are scheduled with advanced notice and are within walking distance from each other.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to maintain the physical capacity required to navigate the school environment and to ensure the safety of the students. The ability to open filing cabinets and bend or stand for long periods of time, as necessary. Classroom locations vary based on student schedules;  this position ascends/descends stairs to teach from different rooms in the building. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets; and frequently moves classroom equipment weighing up to 20 pounds for various classroom and event needs.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $72,000 - $115,000. Mary McDowell Friends School considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, essential skills, internal peer equity, and market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • MA required; special education experience a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and G Suite applications.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external agencies to maximize performance, problem-solving, and achieve results.
